10 eco things you can do

The climate change problems of the world and how to solve them can be an overwhelming issue to take in and take on. But it is actually quite simple when it comes down to it. Here is a list of 10 things you can do as a tourist and at home to reduce your CO2 emissions – those carbon dioxide gasses, which burn the ozone layer, melt the ice and make the world a warmer place – and not in a good way.

  1. Switch off TVs, computers and lights when you are not using them. Also unplug electronic items on standby as well as chargers for mobile phones and other electronic equipment when you are not using them.
  2. Replace old electronic appliances with high-efficiency and low energy ones.
  3. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs.
  4. Save on heat and airconditioning, when possible. Turn it off when doors and windows are open and at night when rooms are unoccupied and while you are at work.
  5. Eat organic vegtables and fruit rather than meat. If you cannot live without meat, buy organic and preferably chicken and seafood. It causes less damage to the environment.
  6. Wash your clothes at 30 degrees and avoid using a tumble dryer.
  7. Walk, bike or use public means of transportation instead of taking the car (unless it is electronic). If you do take the car, fill it up. Ride together with family, friends and neighbours.
  8. Manage your waste, so that plastic bottles, cans and paper can be recycled.
  9. Reduce your use of water. Do not let the water run, when you are brushing your teeth or doing the dishes. Take short showers, and turn off the water while you shampoo yourself. You can even order low-flow showerheads that will reduce your use of hot water and energy.
  10. When you travel, travel with climate-responsible airlines, stay at climate-friendly hotels, eat and shop organic. Also reuse your towels if you stay more than one night, and turn off lights and electronics when you leave your hotel room.
